Through-hole assembly, also known as conventional assembly, is a type of PCB assembly where components are placed into drilled holes on a bare board and then secured by soldering.
While this technique’s popularity has waned in recent years due to the rise of surface mount technology (SMT), many companies still opt for a through-hole assembly because of the benefits that this process provides.
As the components are fixed through the board – rather than to attached to one side of it – the components are able to withstand higher levels of environmental stress. Because of this major advantage, a through-hole assembly is often the preferred process of choice for those creating products that will be subjected to extreme temperatures, pressures or speeds.
Another advantage of a through-hole assembly is that it can be extremely useful and cost-effective when prototyping, or in situations when manual adjustments or replacements are required to be made.
